Description

Action Clutch Lightweight Flywheel – Honda/Acura K Series (Chromoly or Aluminum)

Want your K series to rev faster? Action Clutch makes lightweight flywheels in two versions: chromoly steel (10 pounds) and aluminum (7.5 pounds). Both are way lighter than your factory flywheel. When you cut that much rotational weight, your engine revs up and down way faster. You’ll notice it instantly when you blip the throttle or shift gears. The chromoly flywheel’s made from one-piece chromoly steel with a heat-treated friction surface. The aluminum flywheel’s made from 6061-T6 aluminum with a high-carbon alloy steel friction surface. Both are tested to 18,000 RPM. If you’re building your K series for drag racing, autocross, or track days, these flywheels make your engine way more responsive.

Chromoly Steel (10 lbs) vs Aluminum (7.5 lbs)

Action makes this flywheel in two versions. The chromoly steel version weighs 10 pounds. The aluminum version weighs 7.5 pounds. Your factory K series flywheel weighs somewhere around 16-18 pounds depending on which engine you’ve got. The chromoly flywheel cuts 6-8 pounds. The aluminum flywheel cuts 8.5-10.5 pounds. The aluminum flywheel’s lighter, which means your engine revs even faster, but aluminum’s not as durable as chromoly steel. Chromoly’s stronger and it lasts longer under hard use. If you’re racing frequently or you’re making big power, get the chromoly flywheel. If you want the lightest possible flywheel and you’re willing to replace it more often, get the aluminum flywheel.

Chromoly: One-Piece Steel, Heat-Treated

The chromoly flywheel’s made from one-piece chromoly steel. The friction surface is heat-treated for wear resistance, and the ring gear’s integrated into the flywheel body instead of being pressed on separately. That means you’re not going to have the ring gear separate from the flywheel like you get with cheap two-piece flywheels. The flywheel’s tested to 18,000 RPM and it’s SFI 1.1 certified, which matters if you’re racing in classes that require SFI-certified components. You can resurface the chromoly flywheel when it gets heat-checked or worn.

Aluminum: 6061-T6 with Steel Friction Surface

The aluminum flywheel’s made from CNC-machined 6061-T6 aluminum with a high-carbon alloy steel friction surface. The aluminum body’s lighter than chromoly, but the steel friction surface handles the heat and wear from your clutch. The aluminum flywheel’s made in the USA and it’s dynamically balanced. The aluminum flywheel’s got both 5-speed and 6-speed bolt patterns, so it works with both transmissions. The flywheel comes with the pins installed for 6-speed transmissions. If you’re running a 5-speed transmission, you need to remove the pins and reinstall them in the 5-speed position.

You’ll Need a Type-S Clutch Kit

Here’s the thing: these flywheels require a Type-S clutch kit. If you’ve got an RSX Base, Civic Si EP3, TSX, or Accord with a non-Type-S transmission, you can’t use your factory clutch with these flywheels. You need to swap to a Type-S clutch kit (RSX Type-S or Civic Si clutch). For 2012-2015 Civic Si, 2009-2014 TSX, and 2013-2015 ILX, you also need to flash your ECU with Hondata FlashPro or KTuner to make the clutch work properly.

What You Get

  • Action Clutch lightweight flywheel (chromoly or aluminum)
  • Chromoly: 10 pounds, one-piece chromoly steel, heat-treated friction surface, integrated ring gear, SFI 1.1 certified, resurfaceable
  • Aluminum: 7.5 pounds, 6061-T6 aluminum body, high-carbon alloy steel friction surface, CNC machined, dynamically balanced, made in USA
  • Both versions tested to 18,000 RPM
  • Aluminum version has both 5-speed and 6-speed bolt patterns

Requires Type-S Clutch Kit

  • 2002-2006 Acura RSX Base (K20A3) – need Type-S clutch kit
  • 2006-2011 Acura CSX Base (K20A3) – need Type-S clutch kit
  • 2002-2005 Honda Civic Si EP3 (K20A3) – need Type-S clutch kit
  • 2004-2008 Acura TSX (K24A2) – need Type-S clutch kit
  • 2003-2012 Honda Accord (K24, 5-speed) – need Type-S clutch kit
  • 2002-2006 Honda CR-V (K24A1) – need Type-S clutch kit

Requires Type-S Clutch Kit AND ECU Flash

  • 2012-2015 Honda Civic Si (K24Z7) – need Type-S clutch kit + Hondata/KTuner flash
  • 2009-2014 Acura TSX (K24Z3) – need Type-S clutch kit + Hondata/KTuner flash
  • 2013-2015 Acura ILX (K24Z7) – need Type-S clutch kit + Hondata/KTuner flash

Also Fits

  • 2002-2006 Acura RSX Type-S (K20A2, K20Z1)
  • 2006-2011 Honda Civic Si (K20Z3)

Note: These flywheels require a Type-S clutch kit for all applications. If you’re running an RSX Base, EP3 Civic Si, TSX, Accord, or CR-V, you can’t use your factory clutch with these flywheels. You need to swap to a Type-S clutch. For 9th gen Civic Si, 2nd gen TSX, and ILX, you also need to flash your ECU with Hondata or KTuner. The aluminum flywheel comes with pins installed for 6-speed transmissions. If you’re running a 5-speed transmission, you need to remove and reinstall the pins in the 5-speed position. Lightweight flywheels make your engine rev faster but they kill your low-end drivability. You’ll need to rev your engine more to get moving smoothly. Expect more noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) because you’re cutting rotational mass. This is a race component designed for performance, not a daily driver part.
